Week 2 Progress Report

  • These past weeks I have been internally generating potential questions in relation to the data, questions that went unanswered on the existing data set. I understand that viewing the data as is will help us notice patterns but won’t allow us to understand each backstory to each instance of the killings. Many initial questions I had were based on already given statistics but were still missing key information , such as the location, which is “is the area open/public or more enclosed/private?” Another was whether or not the mental health records were recorded/determined prior or after each of these instances. This can be an unknown factor that can either be incorporated as useful or ignored depending on the researcher.  Different patterns can also be identified that factor in race with even age and once again location, depending on the county/state. This also brings up the question if the state is a blue or red state. After looking at the overall data and noticing patterns such as these, many potential research questions develop that with the use of the data can be eventually answered. Through more interactive viewing many of these questions proposed can be clarified and given a solution.
